<long-description>FACE AIDS Steering Committee

*Overview:*

The mission of FACE AIDS is to build a movement of young people dedicated to fighting AIDS in Africa and promoting global health equity. Since 2005, FACE AIDS has spread to over 200 college and high school campuses across the United States. Strong student leaders are at the core of FACE AIDS, and as we continue to grow as a community, we seek to integrate the most outstanding campus leaders into the leadership of our organization as a whole.

To accomplish this, we are excited to announce the creation of the FACE AIDS Steering Committee. The Steering Committee will bring together 6 to 8 student leaders from across the U.S. and will be charged with envisioning FACE AIDS’ annual national campaigns. (That is, you will be the big picture visionary, but you don't have to worry about the nitty gritty of implementation - the national team will handle that.) The Steering Committee will work closely with the FACE AIDS national staff, and will receive regular briefings on FACE AIDS operational and program developments to inform their decisions.

*Target Population:*

The Steering Committee will be composed of 6 to 8 outstanding FACE AIDS student leaders from colleges and high schools across the United States. Students need not have been their chapter’s leader nor necessarily involved for multiple years, but they must demonstrate passion and enthusiasm, a deep understanding of FACE AIDS’ ethos and goals, leadership skills and vision, and a desire to collaborate as part of a team to further the youth movement to fight AIDS and promote global health equity.

*Responsibilities:*

* Envision two major national campaigns to be carried out by chapters in the 2010-2011 school year
* Collaborate to determine the focus of educational programming and resources for the 2010-2011 school year
* Help to lead the FACE AIDS Fall Conference at Stanford University
* Engage in community outreach during tenure on the Steering Committee, helping FACE AIDS to spread awareness and raise funds. This may include but is not limited to speaking at Rotary Clubs, visiting local campuses to recruit new chapters, mentoring nearby new chapters, and supplying content (e.g. quotes and photos) for publicity materials

*Highlights:*

* Be the vision behind the annual programs for all FACE AIDS chapters
* Shape the future of the FACE AIDS movement
* Develop close and lasting relationships with a small group of outstanding student leaders
* Participate in high-level meetings throughout the year
* Gain valuable leadership experience and professional skills
* Paid transport to and housing during Steering Committee meetings

*Program Structure:*

The 2010 – 2011 Steering Committee will run from May 2010 to April 2011. Student members will meet together in person three times (May 2010, Fall Conference, late winter / early spring 2011), and will collaborate monthly via conference calls. Members will also be expected to check in with executive staff one-on-one on a monthly basis.

The tentative timeline for the 2010 – 2011 Steering Committee is as follows:

* February 22 – March 12, 2010:
Applications to join the Steering Committee open
* March 12 – March 19, 2010:
Applications are reviewed
* March 22 – 26, 2010:
Interviews with finalists
* March 29, 2010:
Offers made
* Early May 2010:
The Steering Committee meets at Stanford University for a weekend leadership retreat, during which they receive a full briefing on the current operations and programs of FACE AIDS and collaborate to generate proposals for the two upcoming national campaigns.
* Late September or early October 2010:
Steering Committee meets at Stanford University one day prior to the Fall Conference for an intensive review of FACE AIDS’ work over the past year, and prepares to help lead sessions at the conference, inspiring 100+ chapter members to return to their campuses impassioned and ready to take action.
* Late Winter / Early Spring 2011:
Steering Committee meets with elected officials and prominent NGO and government leaders in the global health sphere to discuss the importance of youth involvement and create a direct link between FACE AIDS students and global health decision-makers. Also reviews the past year and helps to transition to the new Steering Committee.
